Caleiduino, a digital and interactive kaleidoscope based on Arduino.

Teaching & Learning
CALEIDUINO is a sound interactive digital kaleidoscope based on Arduino. CALEIDUINO is a game, an artistic object and a tool to understand electronics and programming in a creative and entertaining way. The aim of the workshop is to allow teachers to understand the artistic possibilities of technology in the classroom.

What inspired you to make this project?
There are certain things that inspired me to make this project. Firstly, my grandpa was a carpenter and when I was a little boy and I went to his workshop he usually made kaleidoscopes with the junk he could find over there (cardboard, wood, glass...). It was the begining of my fascination for kaleidoscopes. Secondly, as an art teacher involved in the maker movement, for a while I was wondering why all the arduino kits available for students and teachers were committed to teaching robotics but not art and creativity. So, I've tried to combined both ideas in creating a device to learn electronics and at the same time to understand that technology could be artistic and useless.

What are some of the challenges you have encountered and how did you address them?
Challenges:
1) Programming;
2) PCB design and fabrication;
3) Graphic design and packaging;
4) Adapting the device to education needs.
